Heat Treatment & Tempering

General guidelines for forging and heat treatment processes

Forging & Annealing

  • Forging: Heat slowly to 1050°C - 1100°C. Do not forge below 850°C. Cool slowly in ash or sand after forging.
  • Annealing: Heat to 800°C - 840°C, allow to soak thoroughly. Cool naturally in the furnace.
  • Normalizing: Heat to 830°C - 860°C and cool in still air.

Hardening & Tempering

  • Hardening: Heat uniformly to 830°C - 860°C until heated through. Quench in water or oil.
  • Tempering: Heat to 550°C - 660°C depending on the required properties. Cool in still air.
  • Avoid tempering in the lower ranges if maximum impact strength is critical.
